Ofalla Festival of Hymns 2018

Prince Engr Arthur Eze (middle) starring at his birthday cake

Ukpo in Dunukofia LGA of Anambra State has become a centre of attraction, especially during their Ofalla Festival because of one of their illustrious son; Prince Arthur Eze, the money bag. Ukpo’s Ofalla Festival usually ends with a thanksgiving service at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Ukpo and it features different Choirs all over Nigeria, either invited or not.

This year’s thanksgiving in Ukpo which took place on December 23rd was unique because of one Choir from Akwa-Ibom called Real Braz Choir. Their regalia made them objects of attraction. When I first noticed them, they reminded me of Pharaoh's warriors and chariot men, and Israel’s warriors in Bible movies.

Choirs have continued to multiply as each Ofalla thanksgiving comes, because Engr. Arthur Eze is a lover of music, especially Igbo Hymns, and every choir expects a reasonable amount of money after the thanksgiving, but the table seem to turn against the almost thirteen choir groups that were present this year, as they waited patiently, ears itchy and eager to hear the weight of Naira that Prince Arthur Eze will announce. However, after waiting for a looooooong time, the Choirs were dismissed with a promise that will be redeemed come 2019.

Another thing that made the Ofalla thanksgiving in Ukpo unique this year is that Engr Prince Arthur Eze and his brother, Igwe Robert Eze (Okofia VI) celebrated their 70th and 81st birthdays respectively.

I have been thinking, if Engr Prince Arthur Eze is one low class Engr, will he attract many people as what happens around him now? We all need money and should thrive the right way to make it; we may not be as wealthy as Arthur Eze but we ought to at least make the much that can save us from certain troubles and embarrassments that comes with poverty, and when we do make the money, we should not forget that "the earth is the Lords and the fullness thereof". (Ps 24: 1-3)

Why Carol of Nine Lessons?

All Saints Anglican Church Choir, GRA, Enugu

I have celebrated Christmas for many years now and ought not to act freaky as it approach every other year but no, because to me every Christmas comes with a sense of renewal and enthusiasm. Carol of Nine Lessons is one charming event that makes me fall in love with Christmas over again whenever it comes. Only recently did I reminiscence on what Carol of Nine Lessons is all about and how it all began.

Carol of Nine Lessons was first celebrated in 1918 by Kings College Choir at King's College , broadcast by Radio in 1928 and was first televised in 1954. It then spread to other places in the UK and to most parts of the world; today, we celebrate Carol of Nine Lessons, to honour Jesus Christ and gladden our hearts with melodies of hope. Who is behind the long celebrated Carol of Nine Lessons? We may ask.

It was initiated by Eric Milner-White when he returned to Kings College as Dean. Before the world war, he was the Kings College Chaplain but later went to serve as an army chaplain. When he returned to King’s as Dean in 1918, his experience taught him that Church of England needed more imaginative worship. (Kings College)

Carol of Nine Lessons service comes with nine different Bible readings or lessons that tell the story of Christmas, with one or two carol songs in between each of the readings. Carol of Nine Lessons will forever be a wonderful event because of some wonderful artistes like, Cecil Frances Alexander and Henry John Gauntlet; the brains behind “once in Royal Davids City”, George Friedrich Handel; the brain behind “O thou that Tellest Good Tidings to Zion”, Michael Perry; the brain behind “Calypso Carol”, etc. I have been thinking……….; how will Christmas be without the wonderful melodies they have created? They are wonderful people.

2019 Vice Presidential Debate - Aftermath

The vice-presidential candidates’ debate for the 2019 general elections organized by Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDB) and the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON) is a commendable move by Nigerians towards 2019 general elections.

The debate which is first TV debate of its kind took place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, on Friday December 14 2018 had five candidates from five political parties in attendance namely:  APC (Osinbajo), PDP (Obi), Young Progressive Party (Umar Getso), Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (Ganiyu Galadima) and Alliance for New Nigeria (Kadijah Abdullahi- Iya).

A debate of this kind will help Nigerians to view and listen to their candidates at one place to know who they really are and what they have to offer. It will create an avenue for Nigerians to question their political aspirants and judge them by their reactions and words of mouth, and really know who is who or who is better qualified.

This is not expected to end with the vice presidential candidates; candidates at all levels should be involved: presidential candidates down to governorship candidates and councilors. The people we elect to lead us should be made to be accountable and the time is now.

NEDB and BON should exercise their powers, organize and invite all candidates for every political office, one group at a time, to answer questions that borders on Nigeria; its economy and the way forward, and any candidate that did not honour the invitation when it is their turn should be counted out of the race. Human rights activists, youth/students representatives, entrepreneurs, teachers/lecturers, etc should not be left out during such a press conference/debate. Selected well meaning Nigerians should all be invited because it is the right of Nigerians to know who they are voting for.

It is high time our leaders be made to account for the powers we give them. Nigeria will be better if Nigerians work hard to make it what it ought to be. The power is in our hands to give out to somebody, but who? Debate/Press conference for all political candidates can go a long way to help us. Once bitten, twice shy!  We should look before we leap! Good people great nation!

Birthday whispers

I work with an entrepreneur whose birthday is celebrated by his bankers, contractors and beneficiaries. They actually remind him of his birthday by either calling, texting, writing, etc to propose to him how they wish to celebrate his birthday, or they will surprise him on that day with a birthday cake and other presents.

This has taught me that our birthdays will be more valued if we add value to people’s lives. It is good to remember and celebrate ones birthday at will, but birthdays will be more honored if we can help to solve the problems of other people, if we can meet the needs of people, if we can offer solution to puzzling issues, etc.

It will be a wonderful thing if we set our birthdays in motion by working hard to be established, so we can employ people and put food on their tables. On the other hand, those with fat salaries can include the less privileged in their budgets; they can help such people to acquire skills and be useful to themselves and the society.

Those of us with meager salaries are not excluded because giving is not only about money. If we don’t have the capacity to employ people, and we can’t help financially, we can show kindness to people in different other ways, we can encourage the downtrodden, etc. We can help direct such people to be on the right track.

Together, we can fight for a just cause, whichever lawful and godly way we can, to lessen the suffering of people. Those whose lives we have touched positively will never forget to celebrate our birthdays; especially if they succeeded because of us; they will continue to celebrate us even when mother earth has welcomed us into her resting abode.

Happy birthday to me, to Pst Chris Oyakhilome and my other birthday mates; happy belated birthday and happy birthday in advance to all who have celebrated theirs, or are yet to celebrate.

Prophecy Going! Going! Atiku or Buhari?

Many people are confused and frustrated in this present age, especially in Nigeria because they collect peanuts to vote for their candidate and after voting, there are multiple taxes to pay, fraudulent bank charges that awaits them, death trap roads, countless youths without employment, etc., all because of bad, selfish and wicked leaders we vote in to govern us.

Too Many Churches, yet……

Over the years, the masses have seen The Church as a place of refuge, a place of worship where they will go to worship God, pour out their frustrations and receive peace of mind and joy in return. There, churches started booming in Nigeria, to the point that church building has been erected at every nook and cranny. With all these churches, instead of lives being transformed, instead of wickedness, selfishness, hate, idolatry, adultery, bitterness, jealousy, armed robbery, kidnapping, prostitution, child trafficking, etc. to decrease, they have continued to increase, and are even becoming societal norms. Have we even thought of why this is so? Let’s find out together.

Prophecy for Sale!

Most men of God have twisted the word of God and are still twisting it to suit their selfish desires. Some mix up truth with falsehood to avert suspicions while others have deviated completely after gradually brainwashing their members until they can no longer differentiate between truth and falsehood. In my bible, prophecies from men of God brings relief, hope, emotional and psychological healing, and peace; even when the prophecy hurts, but today, prophecies from many  ‘men of God’ causes enmity, chaos, self pity, bondage and frustration.   Instead of earning the respect and admiration of the congregation by total devotion to God and His ways, most men of God have resorted to emotionally blackmailing the congregation, threatening them spiritually and bullying them psychologically to extort from them. Prayers and Prophecy are now for sale; members have to pay to get them.

Rev. Fr, Mbaka’s 2018 Harvest and Bazar

Rev Fr. Mbaka’s political statement during his harvest and bazaar is a good example. He said: “The way he is going, if he (Atiku) continues like this, he has already failed because 31st night is still far for prophecy. Oburo ukwua ka nama ga eji eje Umuahia – meaning this is not the kind of moves that will take a cow to Umuahia”. The reason for the statement being that Atiku has not given anything, and Peter Obi, who was present during the harvest made what he called political promise, because he did not pronounce what he will give.  This whole drama states one fact – Prophecy to pronounce the next Nigerian President is for sale and will go to the highest bidder before January 31st. God have mercy! Men of God should please count Holy Spirit out of this fortune telling madness they call prophesy.

Matters Arising

Nigeria is in a very bad shape and seriously needs a good leader. Nigerian Church ought to be the conscience of the people of this nation – a place where people go to hear the hard truth that will set them free from their wicked ways and not the other way round. Men of God who are close to Nigerian leaders should tell them that Nigerians deserve to have taps that flows with neat water in their homes to prevent water borne diseases, good roads to reduce accident, industries to reduce unemployment and crime, etc., and also talk them into giving Nigerians what they deserve.  Extorting money from politicians and leaders, especially during election season for church projects will not in any way help solve the problems of Nigerians. It is rather, another way of telling politicians to ‘settle us (with peanuts) then you can go ahead to continue stealing public funds as usual -  If the church continues like this, who will bail the cat?

The Big Picture

Church doesn’t need to shamefully beg for money, they only need to work on the welfare of their members by telling politicians and leaders what they should do for the masses who are the members of the churches, and by teaching and helping their members to be financially established. So many people are hungry because of the state of the nation, and so many of them pretend to be living fine when they are not. By the time people have good jobs and salary to live by, the time they will pay water and electricity bills, etc.; and enjoy those without having to pay extra for drinking water and generator, etc, the time when their needs will match their income, When they will earn higher than they need to spend, then, their pastor doesn't have to emotionally blackmail them to give for church projects; they will give willingly - Only good governance can bring those to pass and the church has a big role to play.
