It’s
my birthday today! My birthday comes up tomorrow, next week, next month, etc.
These are the exclamations of excitement that precede birthdays. Two days are
remarkable in the life of every man. The day of birth and the day the person
will die. These days carry a lot of weight. To the former, the weight of
excitement, and to the later, the weight of sorrow. It is good to be thankful to
God for keeping one alive to see another birthday, and also good to celebrate
ones birthday with loved ones. But while we thank God and celebrate, we need to
count our blessings and weigh the worth of our spent years. What have we
achieved for ourselves? How much solution have we contributed to the problems
of mankind? How have we failed God?
Life
works like trade by barter. A tree does not make a forest. There is something
in you that only you can give and if you fail to give it, then, you don’t
exist. In trade by barter, a person who have too many corn and no yam but needs
yam can approach the person who have too many yam but no corn, and exchange
some of his corn with some yam. Life is all about adding value to people’s
lives by rendering those services which we are created to render and likewise
receiving those services which we cannot render.
A
birthday is a time to celebrate birth itself and the joy of life. It also calls
for sober reflection. It is a time to
look back to know whether we have been relevant enough in solving the problems
of man or meeting people’s need. It is
the time to weigh the bygone years to know whether they are empty or filled
with relevant activities. It is a time to look inwards to weigh our spiritual
value; our relationship with our maker.
If
after self examination we did not measure up, there is no need to panic, as we
are still alive to re-write our wrongs. There is still an opportunity for us
that are alive to work on fulfilling our purpose so we can be happy. Life is too
short. When we are gone, we will only be remembered by our acts of goodness.
There
is no better way to celebrate a birthday than to engage in acts of goodness. God
is more honored when we celebrate a life that has shown acts of kindness to our
fellow human beings than when we go for thanksgiving and celebrate our
selfishness. Nothing pleases God more than see His children celebrate a life of
love crowned with acts of goodness and kindness.
Happy
Birthday!
