COURIER ON THE WINGS OF TECHNOLOGY

I traveled down to my forefather’s world last night and guess what I saw. May be you are not good at guessing but I saw men, women and children overusing their energy to carry goods from the point of production to the retailers and to the consumers. I also saw animals moving from one place to the other, overburdened by goods. But I witnessed neither accident nor armed robbery attack, as the donkeys and horses did not collide. There were no breach of contract in the delivery of their products and goods. However, I screamed and asked them to follow me to my world because the whole scenario seemed so clumsy but they declined, saying that they have left my world for good. They also told me that my world and its new ways are the product of their energy and sacrifice.

The relevance of courier services cannot be overlooked. They save us the time of having to travel distances every time we have something to send to other people. This delivery service initiative was threatened when internet technology was introduced. There was gradual drop on the volume of documents being sent, and the future of this business seemed to be at risk then. But alas! As time passed, this business experienced a new spring from the same internet technology. So many manufacturers expanded their businesses through internet digital advertisement and marketing. This therefore, became a consolation to courier services, as they have now become the vehicle through which producers, manufacturers and wholesalers distribute their goods to the retailers and consumers; not forgetting personal parcels they deliver for their customers on daily basis.

Recently, I attended an event organized by Peace Express Services Ltd., a subsidiary of Peace Group, to witness the award presentation to the drivers that delivered the highest number of goods and parcels, and without disappointing their customers. As the event was ongoing, I started imagining things. How clumsy life might be without exchange of goods and services. How boring and tiresome life might be without the means of sending and receiving parcels. In any case, I thought appreciating those drivers is a very good idea, as it will encourage others to handle with care the parcels and goods given to them to deliver. I cannot forget the excitement of those drivers and the clear message of ‘I will do even better’ written on their faces, as they receive their awards for the job well done. At the end, I was not surprised at all why Peace Express services Ltd. is waxing so strong; after all, it has PMT as godfather with branches all over Nigeria.

However, life is not rosy all the time. I have noticed one thing under the sun which is that, there is no hitch free enterprise. To sustain life therefore, we must take risk. Courier business like others is not risk free. It is sometimes affected by accident, armed robbery attacks, theft, etc. Despite all these, courier business has thrived over the years. This is because the majority, if not all of us will not want to go back to live in our forefather’s world again.

RESTRUCTURING IS THE ANSWER

The foundation of Nigeria has been destroyed. The structure holding Nigeria is messed up. Things have fallen apart and the centre can no longer hold. This is no time for pretence or cover up. A sinking person can only be rescued when his hands are lifted up. We should accept the fact that the polity is already poisoned. It is not the poisoning of the rocks, mountains, rivers, etc. in Nigeria but that of the minds, brain, conscience and hearts of many Nigerians which has altered the laws of the nation.

In his speech published on Premium Times of July 21, 2017, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed said that the growing cases of hate speech, disinformation and fake news in the country are being orchestrated by those opposed to the Nigerian government to discredit the government, destabilize the polity and make the country ungovernable. Consequently, the special adviser to president on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina wrote on restructuring of Nigerian minds, published on Vanguard of September 9, 2017. He said, “Some people spend their lifetime expecting thunder storms and hurricane, so they never enjoy showers of blessings. Their addled minds expect negative news, so they never enjoy good tidings. They are the type that swallow poison and then begin to hope that it will kill the person next door. Restructuring, restructuring, that is what such minds need”. He said people throw all sorts of tantrums, like a child whose lollipop is taken away, and attempt to rubbish the news on exit from recession. And that the same people would canvass for a restructuring of the polity. I sincerely agree that the minds of Nigerians need to be restructured but the mind through which the above statement came from needs more of the restructuring because it is blinded by selfishness.  Actually, Nigerian minds are polluted and need to be restructured but it is wrong to direct the lecture to the opposition alone.

People are only agitating for a positive change that this present government cannot guarantee. This is not about hatred for Buhari’s administration. Even if many Nigerians hate him and do not want the country to prosper in his hands, people who understand the times and know the truth know that the present leadership in itself is a leadership of hate and that the present dictator is the architect of hate speeches. Mr. President took hate and bitterness along with him to the throne and should expect nothing but hate. When a wood insect gathers stick, on its own head it carries them. Before he became president, President Muhammadu Buhari never spoke well about former President Goodluck Jonathan. In fact he wished the former president never succeeds. As an elder statesman, he was supposed to encourage and advice the sitting president then. He was supposed to criticize him constructively and educate him on some political/national matters. But no! President Muhammadu Buhari out of hate and bitterness made the following statements during President Goodluck Jonathan’s time: “if the rigging of 2011 repeated itself in 2015, there will be violence in the nation, ala, the dog and the baboon will be soaked in the same blood”. (As far as I know, 2011 election was never rigged) As regards Boko Haram insurgency and call for intervention, reported by Ameh Comrade Godwin on Daily Post of April 3, 2013 President Muhammadu Buhari said again: “There is no way he (Buhari) will be involved in the discussion on how to end the carnage since he was not part of the problem. On the other hand, President Muhammadu Buhari accused the government of President Goodluck Jonathan of killing and destroying houses belonging to Boko Haram members while the Niger Delta Militants get special treatment. This was reported on Point Blank News of June 2, 2013. The above bitter and hate statements shouldn’t be coming from an acclaimed elder statesman who claim to love Nigeria. He is not a leader.

I do not know Former President Goodluck Jonathan personally but the things that have been said about him, his transparent lifestyle and attitude tells me that he is not the kind of person that can provoke somebody especially a person who has been in leadership before him to make such statements. Since the present administrator resumed office, he has been pointing accusing fingers to his predecessor instead of making rights the so called wrongs. According to Olusola Fabiyi on his article of August 14, 2017, it was during President Jonathan’s time that Nigeria made progress on Transparency International’s Annual Corruption perception Index. Nigeria dropped from no 144 to 136 and has remained there till 2017. Why has there not been any improvement in this present administration that has so much accused the past administration for being so corrupt. In his speech, published by Daily Post of September 9, 2017, Presidential Spokesman, Shehu Garba said that the position of the president is that Nigeria does not need restructuring. That what Nigeria need is peace to go about their various businesses. I wonder how this peace will come about because I know that one cannot give what he does not have. The ingredients that make for peace are lacking in our so called leaders. Virtues like sense of responsibility, wisdom, intelligence, sound mind, foresight, etc. that brings about excellence in leadership are all lacking in our leaders. Laws are not being followed. They are only on papers and are usually communicated through mere words by our so called leaders. So what magic is our president going to perform that has not even worked on him? How will he bring about peace in a country where there is no trust; a country where even little children were made to run away from their schools by teachers in order to avoid free medication because they don’t trust the government of the day? There is no sense talking about restoring peace to a nation in chaos without trying something different and better which is restructuring. I wonder what our president is thinking to make such a statement. Does he still have some reasoning faculty left or is he blinded by his pursuit of a secret and selfish mission?

We have a lot to do on restructuring of Nigerian minds that I wonder how possible that can be when those that need it most are pointing accusing fingers elsewhere. What else can we expect from leadership of hate, bitterness and vengeance? It will not be an easy task to restructure Nigeria with such a leader but the point remains that Nigeria needs restructuring. At least of the polity for now, to re-establish trust, then, that of the minds will gradually happen. It is time to try something new. We cannot be doing one thing over and over again and expect a different result. There is need to design a new structure for Nigeria; a structure that will give all citizens equal opportunity to make a difference, a structure that will create room for credible and matured leaders to come into politics, a structure that will wipe out the hyenas and jackals (as Aisha Buhari called them) out of the seats of power. This restructuring requires sweeping the animals out of the seats of power.

If our present circle of leaders claims to love Nigeria so much, then they should prove it by stepping aside to encourage credible professors, lawyers, etc. of good record to take up the governance of Nigeria. It doesn’t matter whether they have got the experience; after all, those with many years leadership experience have failed us over and over again. There is nothing hard about stepping aside for Nigeria to be restructured except for selfish reasons. After all, they don’t wait to blink an eye before flouting the laws of the Almighty God. They kill to win election or retain their position; they embezzle and divert public funds for their own selfish interests, etc. Our so called leaders don’t find it difficult to commit all these crimes so, they should be able to give up the power tussle and accept restructuring. What I am saying is that those occupying the executive and legislative positions in Nigeria and the past Nigeria leaders should do well to withdraw from and stop interfering in Nigerian politics because it is obvious they are possessed by a kind of devil that is now polluting the citizens. If kicking them out is not part of the restructuring, then, it will only be a failed exercise. Nigeria is tired of them and their likes. Nigeria is no one’s personal possession and therefore need to be restructured now.

Mobility, Our Lifestyle

Mobility is one of the activities that characterize human existence. We all move about as we do our daily domestic chores, as we go to our various schools, work places, worship centers, as we visit our family and friends, etc. Some people trek, some ride on bicycles, some on horses and donkeys, and some on motor cars, ship or airplane. It all depends on ones social status, financial status and level of exposure. It is everyone’s desire to retire to bed each day after the movement and hustling that characterize each day without experiencing any form of accident.

My major concern here is mobility by road whereby we have private vehicles, commercial vehicles, motor bikes, tricycle, bicycle, trailers; all horning for a space to advance. The road, like every other means of mobility has its hazard which is accident. Accident is not meant for a set of people. Everyone out on the road each day is prone to accident. However, it is everyone’s desire not to experience any form of accident, hence, we have a great task not to give it a chance.

It is normal for us to cry out against motorists or transporters whenever accident occurs, especially if our loved one is involved. If we don’t cry and criticize, transporters or motorists will not sit up, so, there is need for us to shout out and express our anger. So much has been said against Peace Mass Transit to the extent that even when other transport companies have an accident it will be reported on social media against Peace Mass Transit. For this reason, I have re-examined the activities of Peace Mass Transit to find out if there is something one needs to know. But from my re-examination, I have continued to see things that amaze me. This company has its own technicians specially trained to service its vehicles, A retired road safety official and a customer service personnel conducts training on road worthiness and personal attitude respectively for its drivers on  daily basis; while it engages the services of Nigerian Road Safety for its drivers training on quarterly basis, modern transport technologies like speed limiting devices and tracking devices are in place and active, above all, prayers go on every 12.00 noon at the company’s headquarters at Emene, Enugu, and before the start of work in all its park nationwide. Then I had no choice but to conclude that this transport company is founded to contribute to nation building which is to ease the mobility needs of people and create job opportunities; but like every other transport company and other lines of businesses, has its hazards of which one of them is accident.

While thinking of a solution to curtail this menace, which is not only a Peace Mass transit concern, but the concern of all transporters, I have come to a reasonable fact that it is a collective responsibility. While I enjoin the commercial transporters to do all they can for the safety of their passengers, I plead with the government to come to the aid of road users by constructing new roads, expanding and mending the old ones. On the other hand, commercial drivers should put into practice their daily lessons and obey the traffic rules while passengers should learn to accord the drivers some respect as human beings they are. While on steering, drivers should not be provoked no matter how rough they drive. This is not to justify rough driving but an advice for safety. Instead of cautioning or correcting them in a provocative manner, it is better to talk to them gently to enable them concentrate for the safety of everyone in the vehicle. Soft words are powerful weapons. No one knows what they are passing through personally and any provocative statement can produce bitter reactions and make things worse, and if peradventure, they lose concentration, everyone in that vehicle is at risk. It is better to help them concentrate so they can take everyone to where they have paid to be taken to.  

A friend of mine once shared one of her experiences during her journey with Peace Mass Transit vehicle. According to her, the vehicle galloped on the highway where there is a pothole and a passenger shouted at the driver to take it easy and the driver flared angrily and started talking back at him. Since she was seated in front, close to the driver, she apologized to the driver, pleading with him to calm down and concentrate to avoid the unexpected and the unwanted. When they got to their destination, she approached the young man that was shouting at the driver and told him to always be calm and careful whenever he is talking to a driver on steering because if a driver who cannot control his temper loses concentration both the passengers in that bus and people passing around that area are at risk of losing their lives. Rare wisdom!

I entered a town service bus one day while going to work and the moment I entered, I was enchanted by the laughter from everyone in that bus. I started wondering why they were laughing when I noticed I wasn’t the reason. I was happy when I noticed that it was the driver that is making them to laugh. It happened that when someone complained to the driver about not having a conductor or any fault in his vehicle, he will respond in such a joking manner that will thrill his passengers. Rare attitude!

We need to be conscious of our actions because whether we like it or not, our lives are positively or negatively affected by it. We cannot do without moving about, and this has much more to do with roads; therefore, let us develop a positive attitude that will help us live as long as our Maker wants us to live and serve Him. If every transport company and motorists stops their operations because of accident, how far can we trek? Let us always enter any public vehicle of our choice with a good heart and positive mindset and trust God to answer all our prayers. As humans, ours is to do our very best and leave the rest to God. Over annoying a driver, can cause fatal accident, on the other hand, overexciting a driver can cause accident too. Drivers and passengers should therefore apply wisdom and behave accordingly while on the road because life has no duplicate.

The Python Dance in the South East

There has been serious tension in Nigeria since the president embarked on a sick leave that lasted more than three months. Some embittered people wished him dead as a result of frustration of living in Nigeria, some well meaning Nigerians prayed for his recovery and at the same time for him to resign, while some selfish and pretentious persons have been enjoying the madness of Napoleon leadership style, and trying hard to justify the situation.

On return to Nigeria from his sick leave, Nigerians welcomed their president and while expecting him to resume duty and address the ugly situation of things in the country, instead of listening to his sheep as a good shepherd would, instead of using words that will ease the pains of his people, instead of brainstorming to find a workable solution, our dear president added fuel to the already ignited fire by his words of stubbornness. Is it not a good practice for a father to listen to his agitating children to know what their problem is and make things right? Is it not a common practice for parents to know that all is not well when almost all their children are crying? Would they not rally round to find a workable solution? Agitations has been ongoing in different geopolitical zones of the country before and after our dear president embarked on his sick leave, and has continued even at his return, yet, all we ever see is negative approach and strategy that only aggravate the situation instead of solving it.

The approach or strategy of deploying the military to the South East tagged Python Dance is a useless approach to the insecurity situation in the country because South East is the least place for that. If there should be a military parade on armored vehicles, then it should be in the north were Boko Haram group are destroying lives and properties with bombs and guns. It should be in the north where the Arewa youths have given the South Easterners quit notice to vacate before October 1^st. The military should go there and parade with or test-run their armored vehicles. They should go there to protect lives and properties and see to it that the inhabitants of the north are safe come October 1, 2017. They have no business in the East with peaceful people who are only agitating. There is freedom of speech in Nigeria and everyone has the right to free speech. If it happens that anyone abuses this right, it is only right for the person to be taken to the court and tried. The military should desist from intimidating innocent citizens and instilling fear in them. They should desist from provoking people who are only agitating. This is not to support what the IPOB group is doing but to call a spade a spade. They are not destroying lives and property and therefore, it is unconstitutional for the military to provoke them into doing anything harmful in the name of Python dance. Are we still practicing democracy or are have we gone back to military regime? Nigeria is not a lawless nation. We have laws, we only know how to make laws but we don’t keep them. Why is it difficult for us to apply the laws we have made and give equity a chance?

A Kite that is gliding stylishly, lower than its altitude has a secret and selfish mission, which is mainly to grab a chick it has sighted. Pythons are ambush hunters; which means that they lie in wait for their prey and launch a surprise attack. Why is the Python dance launched around the residence of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu; why Abia state and why the South East? Who is fooling who? This only suggests that Nigerian Army is consciously converting this group to a terrorist group by way of provocation. Any polity where people do not talk or agitate about what is going on is either filled with very happy people or zombies, and from all indications, Nigerians are neither happy people nor are they zombies. The hate speeches and agitations are conflict situations meant to help our leaders to identify the loopholes within their leadership boundaries and work towards them. Wise leaders create something good out of conflict situations; but no, our leaders seize the opportunity to exercise their veto powers and silence their subjects. The Federal Government ought to be making consultations and looking for a workable solution and not the other way round.

It is obvious that we only have gold diggers and opportunists parading themselves as leaders in Nigeria. There is no leadership and no control.
