NIGERIA NEED THE LIKES OF DR. ALEX EKWUEME

We celebrate the rich and the famous; we bow to kings and queens; we fear the powerful and influential personalities; but one thing is note worthy: Those that deserve respect and honour are those who use their God-given potentials to serve God and common man.  Those who deserve to be honoured are men of integrity, men who value the lives of their fellow human beings, men who have good sense of judgment and who stand for the truth, no matter who is involved.

We are all strangers in this world and therefore will one day leave this earth, no matter how well positioned, connected and wealthy we are. I may not know Dr. Alex Ekwueme in person but I have been hearing about him, just like I hear about other politicians and leaders.

According to Vanguard Newspaper of February 3, 2018, Dr Ekwueme practiced excellent humility and made sacrifices for fellow Nigerians. He exhibited exemplary loyalty as a public officer and was a man who was always content with the position he held. According to the vice president, there was nothing about corruption that was linked to him. It was also reported that Dr. Alex Ekwueme was not only an accomplished professional, but also a great statesman who loved his people and the nation at large, which he displayed through his philanthropy and selfless leadership.

Moreover, The Primate of Church of Nigerian Anglican Communion, His Grace, Nicholas Okoh also stated in his message that Ewkueme took people’s problems as his own and advised today’s politicians to get affect people’s lives positively. According to him, if all politicians played the late Ekwueme’s style of politics, Nigerians would be at peace with each other, thereby relegating ethnic politics to the background.

Based on the testimonies of the life Ekwueme lived, it is obvious that he is not the type of politician Nigeria has today. If he can have 60% of his type in politics, Nigeria will indeed be a safe haven for every one of us.

To rename the Federal University, Ndufu Alike, Ikwo Ebonyi State as Dr. Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo is an honour well deserved. We urge the citizens of Nigeria to think of such men of integrity and give them their votes this coming election.
